Design Basics and Your Readers
By: NORHAFIDZ NORDIN

Designing a website sometimes can be very hard in terms of how to attract your readers and at the same time making them stay. Here’s a list of tips you should consider before starting to design a website that works well for your readers.

Always Remember Your Readers

a) Browser

Some designers do not pay enough attention to the mulfunction of a website due to readers that come from different type of browsers. Website that works well in Firefox sometimes doesn’t look pretty in Internet Explorer .

So you have to test your website in multiple browsers. If you design a website with specifically to some browsers, you are making a big mistake. Test your website at many type browsers as you can because your readers come from different type of browsers.

b) Content

Write something that are on demand. People don’t have reasons to stay if things that they want to read are not there. Try making your site more friendly by writing according to your readers needs.

The Design

a) Graphics

I personally think that blinking images and text are not suitable for readers. Studies have shown that these kind of graphics do disturbing readers and more importantly is the reason they left your website.

So, stick with the simple design which makes your readers comfortable. Plus, don’t use images that are so huge in size. It’ll slow down your website and will annoy readers.

b) Fonts

Use the same fonts in every pages. It helps make your website looks professional. Using different fonts in pages is fine but too many type of fonts is distracting.

Limit it to maximum 3 and believe me, more than that will make your website un-pretty. I would suggest these fonts:

Verdana, Geneva, Arial, and Helvetica

It may look simple but it really makes your website easy to read and works well in most browsers.

c) Layout

I’ve seen some website uses 4 to 5 column per page. My god, this is a disaster. I have to admit designing a unique website is very fun to and makes you proud. But beleive me, as a reader, I would rather leave than browsing through a 5 column page.

One to three columns website works very well and they have been used by a lot of successful webmasters. So, use the simplicity factor again to attract readers to your site.

d) Ads placement

This is very important if you are monetizing your website. You can have a lot of ads but it must be place in a correct order and not disturbing the content part.

People will still come to your website eventhough it’s full of ads if the content table is arrange nicely and without any disturbance of the ads.
