RSS or Really Simple Syndication functions as a tool for collecting and storing updated infromation from websites throughout the Internet. These are usually websites that a person has a particular interest in. By using XML code the RSS will "read" through content of assigned websites constantly. When it finds new or fresh information it then transfers it instantly by way of a "feed" to subscribers. Updated information is sent with a headline, some text, and a summary or review of the update. It will also include a clickable link so that the reader has the option to read the entire document. NOte that RSS feeds can also be received by cell phone and PDAs. For a blog or website to accept an RSS feed, a "reader" or aggregator needs to be in place. Through a simple search a wide selection of FREE aggregators can be found online. Entering an aggregator into a website simply requires that you do one of two things. Either click on the RSS or XML button that is found on a site's homepage. One click and the feed has been added to a particular aggregator. Or manually copy and paste the URL of the feed into the aggregator. Both methods will instantaneously be accessible. This particular feed can be canceled or erased at anytime. Email subscriptions to the RSS feed or opt-ins, allow readers to conviently receive updates that avoid spam filters. RSS feeds are popular to the average person because they can control what information they receive and they obtain speedy reports and news.
Aggregators An aggregator (portal) creates a view that is then made accessible on a web page. These can be placed into emails, on desktops, or in independent software. Aggregators offer special features, such as the ability to combine more than one feed in a single view, concealing particular entries or statements that have already been viewed, or providing classifications to entries and feeds. Such features make the aggregator very appealing.
Why Bother with a Feed?
RSS feeds create increased traffic because viewers can "ask" to see what you site offers. Site visibility is peaked when users know they can keep track of what is happening on their favorite site. They will always be aware of new features or benefits that you may offer. Otherwise they have to remember to take time to log into your site and physically browse to find this.
